DAYS AFTER THE People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao humbled Miguel Cotto in their encounter last November 15, 2009, the Philippines are still talking about the victory—how greatness the Pacman has become in ruling the 7th of world titles from different weight classes: from a midget flyweight to a fast hitting welterweight.

One of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year has become official, as the promoter for Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto announced today that the two will fight on November 14 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao-Cotto joins Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez as one of two fights this fall that have boxing fans salivating, and we can be sure that the promoters and the fighters (especially Mayweather) will engage in some trash talk about which of the bouts is truly the year's biggest fight.

Bob Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto, made the official statement:

"Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto have reached an agreement to fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 14," said Arum. "The fight will be seen live on HBO Pay-Per-View. Top Rank is working on a major media tour to start right after Labor Day. Further details will be announced as we get closer to kicking off the tour."

Pacquiao vs. Cotto is a great fight. Pacquiao is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, but Cotto, the WBO welterweight champion, is a real threat to him.

Now let's hope Mayweather, Marquez, Pacquiao and Cotto can all agree that the two winners of these two fights will meet each other in the ring. That would be the superfight every boxing fan would crave in 2010.

Floyd Mayweather JR is still undefeated as he defeats Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19 by Unanimous Decision in a fight that went to distance. Read more about the Mayweather Marquez fight.

First of all, I would like to say sorry for those thousands who went for the wrong channel in Sopcast, I was only able to update the channel information on the post 2 rounds before the end of the fight between Mayweather and Marquez because I was still fast asleep coming home late from an event yesterday.

This upcoming fight between Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) and Marquez (54-4-1, 37 KOs)  scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas is significant for Filipinos fight fans because both fighters must be thinking ahead to a match against Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.  A match with Pacman could become the richest pay day for either fighter although logic dictates that Pacquiao vs. Mayweather would be a far richer match.

"Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez has the potential to be one of boxing's all-time great fights.  Not only are they two boxers destined for the Hall of Fame and two of the greatest technicians of this era……”  so says Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.  Furthermore, De La Hoya picks Marquez to beat Mayweather.  My opinion is that if it is too tactical a fight it could wind up to be a boring match sort of like the Leonard vs. Benitez or the 2 Leonard vs. Hearns matches.  On the other hand, this could end up like the Hearns vs. Cuevas fight wherein Hearns knocked out Cuevas in the 2nd round.  One thing for sure, this is going to be a counter puncher vs. counter puncher match.  This is not a match between two contrasting styles.

There are many questions in my mind.  Did the 2 year lay off affect Mayweather?  Can a fighter step right into the ring after a 2 year hiatus against the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez without a tune-up fight first against a lesser opponent?  Can Marquez bang with opponents as big as Mayweather?  Marquez has a potent right hand which he likes to deliver via straight, overhand or uppercut.  But it is not fast.  In fact he telegraphs it.  He connects with it because he is accurate and has excellent timing when he employs it in his counter-attack.  He has no jab but has a fair left hook which he likes to dig into his opponents’ right ribs.  But is Mayweather too slick for him even after a 2 year lay off?  Can Marquez withstand Mayweather’s barrage of punches from many different angles?  Who will be the aggressor/puncher?  Mayweather has to be careful because “Dinamita” is a dangerous counter-puncher when his opponent is coming to him as
proven during his 2nd match against Pacquiao.  On the other hand, “Pretty Boy Floyd” does not get hit that much and the prospect of the richest fight in history against Pacquiao, not to mention the bragging rights for the pound for pound best fighter designation previously bestowed on him, might just give him an added incentive to give it his best.

If Mayweather did not train well, it is too late now and he only has himself to blame.  Marquez is known for his intensive training regimen and is in tip top shape even at the ripe age of 36.  Still I do not think Marquez can really hurt Mayweather so the pick here is:   Mayweather by TKO in the ninth.
